By Six O’clock is a collection of stories that focuses on the connections that people make with each other, whether it be as romantic partners, parent-child, coworkers, friends, or enemies. Over the course of 13 short stories, 1 novella, and 1 one-act play, we meet two 12-year-olds who share an unexpected afternoon together on New Year’s Day 1991, a twentysomething guy whose best friend helps him get over a heartbreak, a down-on-her-luck woman who unknowingly finds herself in the presence of an enemy, a young Philadelphian who has an impromptu romance with a Canadian woman in town on business, and two coworkers who finally reveal their passion for each other on the night before one of them is due to leave for a long vacation. Using a realistic but sympathetic tone, these stories allow us to explore the many ways that connections between people can be made, challenged, saved, and broken.
